The 2010 Oscar Nominations – Sparkle’s Predictions
Posted on 02. Feb, 2010 by Jack in TV & Movies
It’s the biggest movie awards ceremony of the year; the one that still has the most kudos with movie fans and people in the movie business itself. And let’s face it we love all that showbiz sparkle, tears, false sincerity and truly shocking dresses that are part and parcel of the Oscars.
This year’s Oscar nominations were announced around lunchtime today; so who’s actually in the running for the biggest prizes in moviedom in 2010?
Best Film 2010 – The Nominations Are…
Avatar
District 9
An Education
The Blind Side
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
A Serious Man
Up
Up in the Air
Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire
Sparkle’s Prediction: Nice to see Pixar’s delightful UP in there, but it’s got no chance. Avatar might have won the best picture award at the Golden Globes, but it’s just not the sort of movie the Academy gives ‘Best Picture’ awards to. Personally I’d love to see Inglourious Basterds win it but the Academy aren’t really Quentin fans. Iraq based movies aren’t big box office but the critics loved this one, therefore Sparkle’s prediction for best picture is The Hurt Locker.
Best Actor in a Leading Role 2010 – The Nominations Are…
Jeff Bridges – Crazy Heart
George Clooney – Up in the Air
Colin Firth – A Single Man
Morgan Freeman – Invictus
Jeremy Renner – The Hurt Locker
Sparkle’s Prediction: All great performances; however, this could be a two man race between Colin Firth and Jeff Bridges. But the chances are that the Academy will go along with the Golden Globes and Critic’s Choice winner Jeff Bridges.
Best Actress in a Leading Role 2010 – The Nominations Are…
Sandra Bullock – The Blind Side
Helen Mirren – The Last Station
Carey Mulligan – An Education
Gabourey Sidibe – Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire
Meryl Streep – Julie & Julia
Sparkle’s Prediction: One of the hardest categories to predict with Sandra Bullock, Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep as front runners. Sandra Bullock won both a Golden Globe (Drama) and tied with Meryl Streep for the Critic’s Choice award, but the subject matter of The Blind Side might be a bit too ‘movie of the week’. Helen Mirren won the award in 2006 for The Queen, so it’s a bit too soon to give her another. This year might just see a hat trick of Oscars for Meryl Streep.
Best Actor in a Supporting Role 2010 – The Nominations Are…
Matt Damon – Invictus
Woody Harrelson – The Messenger
Christopher Plummer – The Last Station
Stanley Tucci – The Lovely Bones
Christoph Waltz – Inglourious Basterds
Sparkle’s Prediction: I’ve got a funny feeling about Stanley Tucci, but it really should be Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role 2010 – The Nominations Are…
Penelope Cruz – Nine
Vera Farmiga – Up in the Air
Maggie Gyllenhaal – Crazy Heart
Anna Kendrick – Up in the Air
Mo’Nique – Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire
Sparkle’s Prediction: The other girls might as well not bother buying any posh frocks this year – Mo’Nique is going to win this one at a canter.
We’ve got just over a month to see how many predictions, if any, hit the nail on the head. But before the winners are announced on Sunday 7th March, why not tell us who your choices for the top awards are?

Loved An Education Jack, it was set in 1961 the year I was born so I loved all the old cars etc. I thought Carey Mulligan was brilliant in the movie

I really wanted to see ‘UP’ but my son is now nearly 20 so there was no way he could let me take him lol. Can’t comment on the other nominations, never fancied Avatar myself but friends have seen it and said it was good. Best Actor I would have to say Colin Firth, next film I want to see is A Single Man. Have to agree with you about Meryl Streep, she is a great actress, but again I haven’t seen her in that film. Stanley Tucci (Lovely Bones) … great film, read the book first too. Will go with you Mo’Nique although I don’t know her at all.

1961 was a clearly an exceptional year Mike – you and I were born and Yuri Gargarin was the first man in space.
Totally agree with you about Colin Firth Marj, but I think our American friends will go for one of their own with Jeff Bridges.
