Finding Romance at the Office Christmas Party

Posted on 06. Dec, 2009 by Andrea in Lifestyle, Relationships and Dating

Office Christmas PartySurveys have shown that an office Christmas Party is not only good for morale, but that it consolidates working relationships, forges new bonds and is the ultimate team building exercise. It’s also the occasion when many office romances blossom. But get too far into the Christmas spirit and you could suffer radical romance-wrecking and career-curtailing consequences.

So if you’re lucky enough to be having an office Christmas party this year and you’ve got your eye on that someone special, here’s Sparkle’s essential guide to ensuring that when they sweep up the empty party popper cases in the morning, the shreds of your dignity, career and love life won’t be amongst them.

Dress to impress
Girls, this is the time to cast off the office attire and show how glamorous you can be. Aim for a look that combines sophistication with fun, and dress appropriately for your age. As a general rule of thumb, if you can see your nipples below your hem line you’re probably wearing something too short.

Boogie nights
The dance floor’s a great place to nurture those budding relationships provided you keep a level head. It’s worth remembering that break dancers are essentially athletes and practice their moves endlessly, usually without the aid of alcohol.

The X Factor
Karaoke is one of those evil inventions that dangles the promise of stardom and sex appeal in front of your nose but then takes six pints to finally drop it into your lap. I don’t care if your mother says you look just like Robbie Williams in a certain light, ripping your shirt off and swinging your beer belly around while belting out ‘Rock DJ’ is simply not the way for the boss to behave.

Watch your back
Girls, even the most natural of tasks can take on Krypton Factor complexity when the brain is fuddled. If a sudden draught is finding its way to your buttocks, there’s a good chance your knickers have swallowed the back of your skirt.
Nothing says ‘loosen the tongue and remove all other senses’ quite like a magnum-sized ingestion of cheap champagne and if there’s one thing you can be absolutely certain of, it’s that the moment you decide to enlighten colleagues about your opinion of the boss, he’ll be standing right behind you.

Looking for love
You don’t have to be The Mentalist to recognize when someone’s body language is giving you messages. Dilated pupils let you know that she’s physically attracted to you…or that she’s on drugs; your call. And while generally speaking, getting a gentle touch on the arm or shoulder while chatting is code for the green light, a right hook to the jaw can safely be taken as more of a ‘no entry’ sign.

Finally, don’t be fooled into thinking that everyone else is at least as drunk as you are and no-one noticed you throwing up over the boss’s car. Just about everybody has a phone camera nowadays and the chances are that irrefutable evidence will be plastered all over YouTube and a P45 will be in the post before the hangover’s even kicked in.

Still, it’s Christmas – a time to Sparkle. Go for it!

I agree with the Karaoke comment, never a truer word said!!! As one who’s only ever been to one christmas dinner in his entire ‘working’ life and never been to the atypical Office Do, I feel that I’ve escaped any embarrassing incidents!

Loved this Andrea, very funny and sadly very true. I think I´ll skip the Xmas party this year.

Hee hee…great dress advice there Andrea. I shall bear that in mind! Love this article, if I were a boss I’d be sending all my staff to read this blog.
