Poetry on Friday – Mirrorball by Elbow
Posted on 27. Nov, 2009 by Rachael in Books, Poetry

Earlier in the week I decided that I would search high and low for a really special poem for this Friday. I scoured my poetry books and you nearly got some John Keats today, almost a little something from Christina Rossetti – Robert Graves was very close to be selected to speak to you from his grave. But even my all-time favourite poems were not quite ‘singing’ to me enough. I really wanted to bring you something SPARKLING.
And then I had a flash inspiration…I remembered Mike, Sparkle Music man, leaving a comment about the poetry and beautiful pose to be found in some songs. So with that in mind, I am very happy to share with you the stunning lyrics to Mirrorball by the band from Bury, ELBOW…
I plant the kind of kiss
That wouldn’t wake a baby
On the self same face
The lie wouldn’t let me sleep
And the street is singing with my feet
And dawn gives me a shadow I know to be taller
All down to you, dear
Everything has changedMy sorry name
Has made it to graffiti
I was looking for
Someone to complete me
Not anymore, dear.
Everything has changedYou make the moon a mirrorball
The streets an empty stage
The city’s sirens, violins
Everything has changedSo lift off love
All down to you, dear
And lift off love
All down to you, dearAnd we took the town to town last night
We kissed like we invented it
And now I know what every step is for
To lead me to your door
Know that while you sleep
Everything has changedYou make the moon a mirrorball
The streets an empty stage
The city’s sirens, violins
Everything has changed.
Everything has changed.
Everything has changed…..
For me this is poetry perfection. So then add to this the beautiful voice of front-man Guy Garvey and an amazing musical arrangement…well I’m in seventh heaven. If you only invest 5 minutes into yourself today, then crank up your computer speakers, sit back, close your eyes and spend that time listening to this. You’ll be glad you did.

Love the line “We kissed like we invented it, And now I know what every step is for, To lead me to your door”.
At some time in our lives we all should feel these words.
Love the twist on poetry friday Rae, keep them coming!

Absolutely beautiful, should have listened to the track first though, I read it like poetry so when I listened to the track it wasn’t what I wanted it to be, but the lyrics are just so pretty.
I agree with Tabitha, loving using lyrics for poetry day, more please!
