Planning a New Moon Party

Posted on 23. Nov, 2009 by Andrea in Lifestyle

New MoonIt seems that everyone has been bitten by vampire mania and you can’t turn the pages of a magazine or scroll an internet site without seeing the faces of Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart pouting back at you.
Well with the party season upon us, why not act out your own Twilight fantasies with the Bella, Jacob or Edward of your dreams by throwing a New Moon themed party?

The next new moon (that’s the one in the sky, not on the screen) is due on the 16th December, so if you want to be purist about this, that’s the date for the calendar. But let’s be honest, we’re looking for full on moonlight here to give our party that romantic, dangerous edge which means you have just until the 2nd December and the next full moon to get organised.
Here are a few Sparkle pointers to make sure your party doesn’t suck (the puns can only go downhill from here).

First, you’ll need ‘the look’.
Girls – you’re aiming for the-sexiest-girl-who-ever-moved-to-our-neighbourhood look. That means you have to spend several hours and half of Boots cosmetics counter getting the ‘no make-up’ look. Eyes should be just dark enough to look troubled, foundation should be a shade lighter than your skin tone for that ‘just bitten’ look and lips can be anything from coral to blood red.
The good news is you don’t have to glam’ up in the clothes department. Just wear your jeans with a tight-fitting, tailored shirt and loads of Goth jewellery then step into the shower and hey presto!

Guys – you’re aiming for the soulful-romantic-and-mysterious-look.
Remember, these vamps don’t sleep so don’t turn up looking like you just got out of bed. Some effort is required here; vampires take their personal grooming very seriously indeed.
Hair should be gelled to within an inch of its life and you’ve got until 2nd December to grow some decent sideburns. Jeans should be teemed with shirts, worn open over T shirts. Sleeves folded (not shoved) to above elbows and don’t forget clean underwear or that deeply troubled look could become all too real.

A Thirst for Blood
When planning the evenings’ drinks, Bloody Marys should feature highly – obviously.
Go in for the kill with a shot of Death (black Sambuca and tequila) or Death in the Afternoon (absinthe and champagne).
Then really get into your role playing by siring the guests with a glass of Corpse Reviver (absinthe, gin, lemon juice, Cointreau and Lillet blanc) – whoever named that one had a great sense of irony.
Be warned, drink too many Deaths and Corpses and the next day your attempts at looking like the un-dead will be all too spookily authentic.

Sounds and Bites
If you’re planning a formal meal, kill two stereotypes with one dish and let your vampires and wolves sink their teeth into a nice neck of lamb. Alternatively, make life easier for yourself and simply provide a selection of quick bites and some death by chocolate desserts.

When it comes to setting the mood, overdose on the Van Morrison, Linkin Park, Radiohead and Muse soundtrack of the movie and you’ll have everyone wishing they could bypass the neck nibbling and get straight to the death section of the night. Liven things up a bit with some classics which were clearly recorded just for this purpose; Hound Dog, Werewolves of London, Who Let the Dogs Out and The Killing Moon, to name just a few.
Of course, the night won’t be complete without at least one play of Bad Moon Rising and just when the eponymous star of the show is at its brightest, lead your Bella, Jacob or Edmund by the hand and brave the cold for the irresistible romance of Moon Dance.

So there you have it, the Sparkle recipe for the perfect New Moon Full Moon party and if you don’t like it …bite me.
