New Super Mario Bros – Wii

Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros

You would think the silly girl would know how to get though her day-to-day existence without getting herself kidnapped AGAIN.

Of course I’m talking about Mario’s long term love interest Princess Peach who has probably spent more time blindfolded in the back of a transit van than sitting on her throne.

Even Terry Waite can’t touch her record for time spent away from home and frankly Mario does put up with a lot.

When you first see the title you immediately think… Oh No not another Mario game, well I always seem to even tho when I was 14 years old he was the man.

Nintendo seem to have had the golden touch right from the old Game and Watch days though to all the many countless incarnations of the Game boy to Goldeneye on N64 and the totally fantastic awe-inspiring adventure of the Zelda series.

Their ability to always keep their games fresh but still retaining their licences for use year in year out has been remarkable.

Every time you think Nintendo will fail they pull it out of the bag… a classic example of this is the multi million selling Nintendo DS which has just celebrated its 5th birthday and now the biggest selling games machine of all time.

So have they got the remotest chance of failing with this new adventure with the plumbers….??

Over the years Mario has moved from being a tiny LCD blob to a fully rendered digital 3D avatar, but with this latest console outing Mario has stepped back in time a bit to his 2D former self from 1991.

1991 was a big year with Super Mario 3 on the scene and closely followed by the best Mario game of all time Super Mario World – oh and not forgetting the blockbuster movie starring Bob Hoskins (yeah I know I said blockbuster…ok)

From the moment you power up this game those things all come flooding back and the fans of this game will be singing its praise and really its hard not to…

This game is no longer just for kids and their mums who love to watch. The developers have been mindful of the 35 year olds out there and have cranked up the difficulty settings tenfold as you progress though the levels.

Of course it’s bright, colourful and a tad cheesy but that’s what we want isn’t it? Nearly all of the fantastic characters we love are back including Yoshi who is my personal favourite.

Mario this time has some impressive power-ups like a propeller suit that will keep you in the air with a shake of your Wiimote just a little bit longer. There’s also an ice flower and penguin suit – but for me seeing Mario doing his spin jumps last used on Super Mario World brought a tear to my eye…

Kinda like seeing Douglas Bader the World War 2 fighter pilot taking his first steps again… (Well not really)

But anyway, this game is good at mixing new and old elements together beautifully and the game has a great original multi-player mode which will be fantastic for those long winter nights in with your mates.

This adventure is definitely not a ported version of the Mario games you get on the DS, so don’t feel like your wasting money if you own them too.

This game is still a delight to play even tho most people wont admit to owning a copy let alone play it or god forbid getting addicted to it.

So in this little self help group I stand proud and say….

“Hello my names Kevin and I’m a Marioholic” – there I feel better now…

We give this game a sparkle rating of 91.7%
